“Strike Up The Band: From Broadway to Jazz”
This interactive workshop will introduce attendees to songs that originated in classic American musicals that later became part of the standard American Jazz repertoire. Beloved jazz classics like “Lady Be Good”, “If I Were A Bell” and “On The Street Where You Live” all originated in Broadway musicals, but went on to be adopted by jazz musicians.
The musical group leading the workshop will play the song in both the original “show” version and then
demonstrate & explain the musical changes these songs underwent as they were interpreted with jazz musical language. In honor of “America250”, the band will play their own jazz arrangement of a song from the Broadway musical “1776”, which depicts events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The group will also include a song from the American musical series “School House Rock” which famously musicalized lessons on a range of subjects including American history and civics.
The workshop will be a true American-Chilean collaboration, featuring American vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli, American bassist Pat O’Leary alongside Chilean pianist Oscar Pizarro & Chilean drummer Alejandro Espinosa.
